MENANDRO CHAVEZ III

The Kadayawan Festival is a yearly festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting “Madayaw”, a word from Dabawenyo “Dayaw”, it means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a festival of life, a Thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, rich culture, the bounties of harvest and tranquillity of life.

Today, Kadayawan has become a festival of festivals, with a number of spin-off festivals of the region. The festivals honors Davao artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “Lumads”, its people as they celebrated in the streets, and the floral industry as their representative parade in full regalia in Thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city. The festivities are highlighted with floral floats, street dancing competitions and exhibitions setting out the island’s tourist products and services. Davao City’s Kadayawan Festival, normally held in August and filled with music, colour, revelry and grandeur, is a festival of everything bountiful in Davao.
